Low Down on Gel Coats and Paint
Gel Coats and finishes require special attention to prevent oxidation problems. Since VOC regulations changed in 2003 paints may no longer contain lead. Most are now either polyurathane or chroma based paints. Non-lead paints do not have the durability of lead based paints so they oxidize faster if they are not properly cared for.
If you are using a wax or protectant that contains a low grade petroleum distillate or a product made from silicone, it can rapidly deteriorate the sealant and paint resulting in oxidation.
Know what is in your product. You have a right to know what you are putting on your boat, car, RV, plane, or truck otherwise that product can cause expensive damage. If you don't know what is in your wax or protectant then don't use it. Chances are the company is trying to hide the fact that it contains silicone.
Silicone can cause oxidation. Although it can be acid washed off a surface, it is impossible to remove 100% of the silicone. If your boat is oxidizing and you need to repaint, the new paint will not properly adhere to the silicone. Within a few months the paint will peal.
Carnauba wax penetrates gel coats and paints and works down to the fiberglass base where it seals the fiberglass. Fiberglass must breathe or it turns yellow from "suffocation."
